I have tried some of the modern large Freesia culivars both single and
double in the open garden, but at least in my conditions I find that the
heads of even the single forms are so heavy that the stems do not stand
up well unless artificially supported. This in my book makes then
unsuitable as garden subjects, where a forest of stakes can be anything
but attractive, and perhaps they should be mostly reseved for the
cutflower trade, where their large flowers and interesting colour range
can be best appreciated.

I suppose a possible way to deal with the problem of support would
possibly be to grow them through other plants. No doubt one could
achieve some very attractive colour combinations by careful choice of
support plants.
