Nan:
Betsy Clebsch recently gave a talk to the Western Horticultural Society meeting
in Los Altos CA. I asked her if she had any tips on pruning salvias. Betsy
recommended that salvias be left alone. Her own efforts to prune them had
failed and she had killed some plants. This advice didn't apply to those soft
salvias that die back in winter such as S. leucantha.
Perhaps your plants will fill in over this coming winter. If not, try rooting
some cuttings and starting over next spring? Or perhaps seed something low
below them to infill the bare branches?

I have several of the brittle, woody salvia-greggii type salvias that
are in dire need of pruning -- I think. All of the foliage is
towards the ends of the branches so the plants are all twigs in the
center and not terribly attractive. I have been hesitant to prune
them as I am concerned that cutting off all of the foliage will kill
the plant. What pruning schema shall I use?
Thanks!
