Jan:

I'm a little bit familiar with Upland, since I have a friend in Claremont
that I always visit when I get to southern California. S. cacaliaefolia is
nearly hardy for me, and it dies to the ground. Whether by rhizomes or
underground stems, it can stand being cut back, unless the underground
system has not developed.

I always include at least one node in the rooting medium, to provide points
for new shoots to emerge from. Some propagators don't do this. I can't
think of any reason why an established plant wouldn't come back.
