These would certainly grow under these conditions, but
do you have a problem with deer in your new location?
Freshly planted Toyon seem irresistable to deer, and
might need protection. Other native shrubs to
consider might include Myrica californica, Rhamnus
californica, Garrya elliptica, Mahonia aquifolium or
M. lomariifolia, all of which do well in part shade in
competition with tree roots. I couldn't tell you
which are least likely to attract deer, as it varies
by locality. Not native, but Pittosporum eugenioides
is a nice foliage color accent to the dark greens of
the pines, looks great in the rain, and lights up
shady areas...
Suncrest Nursery has a cool new cultivar of Toyon with
yellow berries which was first selected by Warren
Roberts up at UC Davis, and might be worth checking out.
