Nan, Even though you are in zone 24, I seem to recall
that you saying your garden is in a canyon that gets
frost, so technically you probably aren't a true zone
24.  In the interest of keeping your 3rd effort alive,
this plant is very frost tender, and also not very
drought tolerant.  I'd suggest giving it the benefit
of your warmest location in winter, and make sure it
doesn't go too dry.  Here in Berkeley, it seems most
happy with dappled sun/bright shade, and fertile,
humousy soil.
