Hi Lisa--
Nothing theoretical to contribute, but pragmatically, I have had good luck with various "ferns"--many actually ornamental asparagus--in shade with very little water: a surface spritz every other week, even once/month, keeps them attractive. And if it's just light shade eg. below a jacaranda, my Cape plumbago is doing well. It flowers, albeit not as richly as in full sun, and gets about the same occasional surface spritz as the "ferns."
