Re:additional drought tolerant shade plants for Medit-plants List

Sean,
After reviewing the published list, I realized that
there were lots of plants that I frequently use in
such conditions that aren't on this list. Here are
some plants that I find at least as drought tolerant
as some of the others on the existing list, handling
light to medium shade and twice monthly watering in
coastal California conditions:

Acanthus spinosissimus
Aechmea: caudata, leppardii, nudicaulis, recurvata
var. benrathii
Aeconium: hawarthii, simsii, undulataum
Aloe maculata
Billbergia nutans
Carex tumulicola
Clivia nobilis
Crassula multicava
Dianella: ensifolia, intermedia, tasmanica
Echeveria: agavoides, elegans, harmsii, x imbricata,
pulv oliver
Gnidia polycephala
Leymus condensatus 'Canyon Prince'
Nerine bowdenii
Pelargonium tomentosum
Plectranthus: neochilus, zuluensis
Protoasparagus retrofractus
Sedum: confusum, dendroideum
Senecio tamoides

I do wonder about some of the other listings such as
Abutilon hybrids and Brunfelsia pauciflora, these
haven't proven to be particularly drought tolerant in
my own garden, and don't bloom well, without more
frequent watering, or don't do well with dense tree
root competition.

The category of shade and drought tolerant plantings
that will do well under surface rooting trees and
fairly deep shade is probably a much shorter list, and
in my view would only include those plants that look
good under such conditions. In my experience this
list would be heavy on the bromeliads and shade
tolerant succulents, and some South African/Australian
herbaceous things such as Plectranthus neochilus, and
Dianellas as examples.
