Joan:

A separate character like that would have to be a previously-defined
extended ASCII character to be useful for most users.  The only alternative
would be to create a new font with custom characters, but this would do you
no good unless you would get the font metrics files for the font set sent
along with the message.  I believe there are technicians working on such
fonts, downloadable for each message.

Part of the utility of Adobe Acrobat files (PDF) is that the document's font
definitions are embedded.  This won't help you write such a document, and it
won't help anyone who does not have an Acrobat reader.
