There is a way to get to the more obscure ASCII characters (such as €) on a
laptop keyboard without a separate number keypad. On the keyboard, you may
have a Function key (Fn on my keyboard). If you hold it down AND the ALT key
down, type 0128, and release the keys, you get the euro symbol. The trick,
however, is that you don't use the regular numbers across the top of the
keyboard. Oh, no! That would be too obvious. If you look at the M, J, K, L,
U, I, and O keys, you may see a small number in the corner of each key (0-6
respectively; 7-9 are on their respective number keys). This is the laptop
equivalent of a keypad. With the function key down, the keypad is available.
So Fn-Alt-MJK8 is the euro symbol.

I hope I haven't made this even more confusing. Alternatively, in Windows
there's always the Character Map software (and Key Caps on the Mac).
