V. major/minor

I have read the various discussions, information, and debates your Q raised, Pam, and have found the responses fascinating.  Anthony's delighted me esp.; my own background is in Medieval English Literature so it was fun to see old friends referenced and quoted.  And since my brother is a/an historian, I forwarded it to him.  Response: "I LOVE things like this!  THIS is why I became a historian."

BUT: My real thought was the possibility that no answer will be found in early  printed sources,  ie pre-Linneaus [What pictorial resources exist?] .  Earlier classification systems existed, to be sure, but they would have been made upon different criteria, eg  poisonous/nonpoisonous; medicinal benefits or lack thereof; utility value, and the like.  I read somewhere that ancient Egyptians classified papyrus spp. [actually, "reeds" generally] on the basis of their possible utility as writing materials....
This adds nothing to the discussion; just thought I'd toss it in.
