Re: red sugar

John, how do you think the red compare to the green? I wonder whether their heat requirements differ - I have green sugar growing in my garden which is probably not too different from Pasadena (we may not get as hot as Pasadena in the summer) and the green grows like gangbusters (a little too happily, actually).

Nan,

I have grown the red sugar cane for seven or eight years, but I find it
takes a lot of heat to make it a success. It is a true tropical plant, and
our cool nights (anything below 65 degrees) just don't turn it on. A spot
right next to a south- or west-facing house wall would be best. It only
grows actively in Pasadena when the daytime temperature goes well above 90
degrees, and every winter it dies way back, although so far it has survived.
I can't estimate how big it would grow under ideal conditions. We just
can't provide them.
