Nan - I live in Santa Monica and have beautiful red sugar cane. The only time the plants are not blissfully happy is in the winter when some stalks fall from heavy rain and wind, probably due to their shallow root system. Last winter I staked the plants that fell. Can't remember exactly how many plants I started three years ago, could be three. Now I have one about a three foot by three foot grove of cane, some as tall as seven feet.
