This just in from Jo O'Connel, owner of Australian Native Plants

Yes Nan I can answer the question.
I know that Grevillea lanigera, G. Robyn Gordon, G. Masons Hybrid & G. Wakiti sunrise' are growing in the Palm Springs area. I also know that G. 'Sylvia' & Grevillea 'Moonlight' are growing in Phoenix AZ. I have a few desert grevilleas, one currently available is G. stenobotyra.
It seems to be a bit too dry for most proteas and banksias but there are a couple of desert forms of Banksia, B. marginata & Banksia elderiana. I also have B. audax which is from the West Australian desert.
I have had growers from the Las Vegas area buy proteas from me but I don't know how well they are growing.
Hakeas do famously though,so they are well worth a try and they are stunning some of them! AND definitely summer watering in a garden situation - deep infrequent during those hot dry months.
Hope this helps.
regards
Jo

It came to me from one of my gardening discussion groups - the Medit Garden discussion group which is a fabulous group in case you might be interested in joining. Info on joining the list is at www.mallorn.comThanks!Nan
Does anyone if Proteas, Banksias, and Grevillias can tolerate dessert heat (with some shade at the hottest times)?
I have a friend in Palm Springs, Californai, that was wondering if they would survive there. I believe it gets up to about 43 degrees there on summer days. I have read that they don't like summer watering, but some summer water would be essential in such a climate. Anyone grow them in southern California or in a dessert setting?
