Would Arbutus unedo do, with a few clematis growing through it to flower at different times?
As for soil amendments: she should empty her tea grounds on it - she just needs to hold the pot of cold tea out the dining room window and upend it (after remembering to remove the lid). We make at least 7 pots of tea a day here, so that should acidify a small area in not too long a time.
