The only plant not mentioned so far that
I can think of for this difficult spot is one I have growing successfully in
just such a spot. Daphne odora (marginata is what I have.) It blooms
in the winter around January, does well with only weekly summer water, because
of its position, and takes what light it can get. It looks lovely in
summer because of the variegated foliage in the shade. I also have a
pieris japonica in that area, which is thriving as well, also variegated.
These are both moderate in size and growing quite cozily with camellias and a
gardenia. along with some variegated Carex. It's my green and white
garden, except when the camellias bloom pink and red. Anyway, I acidified
with sulphur a while back, like Moira suggested, and everything is happy as
clams.
