If we are just talking favorite big shady tree, I think the valley oak, in maturity is the most beautiful, picturesque tree.  Quercus lobata nee

But that's just me.

I mean a year-round tree to shade a pathway, not to grden beneath.

     I like Acer circinatum Vine Maple, it is currently displaying brilliant fall color here in El Cerrito, CA.
