I believe they are talking about Maytenus boaria or M. chinensis.

Many thanks to you and several other people who have kindly enlightened me.

When I consulted my local books I found to my surprise that though I had never heard of it, it is evidently known and even grown here. They both (Flora and Botanica) had good pictures of it and to my eye it looks very like a weeping willow, though I gather it is actually evergreen.

Its great spread sounds though as if it would be out of scale with the average NZ suburban garden and only suitable for our more extensive properties. I can imagine it making a most attractive specimen on a big lawn somewhere not too frosty.

As to whether it might become a weed here, I can find no local references suggesting this, but I note it belongs to the same family as the Spindleberry (Euonymus) which is here a proscribed weed in some areas and this is to me suggestive.
