Re: Arum lilles

Pamela,
I assume that you are referring to what we call Calla
Lilies here in California, Zantedeschia aethiopica.
As they are reliably winter growing here where we get
little frost, the growing season is not the same as
yours in London. They are generally evergreen year
round here with sufficient summer moisture, but can
die back to the ground with drought. Under
winter/late fall cold, the treatment would be similar;
cut back to the ground, and bring into a more
protected spot if in a container. I's suggest that in
London this is hardy enough to plant out in the
ground, although I will leave it to locals to advise
you as to whether it should be additionally mulched to
protect the "bulb" from freezing. Give it a good
general purpose feed in spring with new growth, and
perhaps withold water in late summer/early fall to
induce dormancy. They can also be grown as a
submerged water edge plant if you prefer, as they love
water in the growing season. Here in California, they
are mostly winter into spring growers, and can be in
bloom at almost any season along the coast.
