Here's a list of central Chilean plants that I've seen in gardens (public and private) in our own Med. climate areas:

Acacia caven

Alstroemeria

Aristolochia chilensis

Auraucaria araucana

Austrocedrus chilensis

Berberis buxifolia

Berberis darwinii

Calandrinia

Calceolaria

Centaurea chilensis

Chusquea culeou

Dacrydium fonckii

Desfontainia spinosa

Drymis winteri

Echinopsis littoralis

Embothrium coccineum

Eucryphia cordifolia

Fuchsia lycoides

Fuchsia magellanica

Lapageria rosea

Leucocoryne

Lobelia tupa

Luma apiculata

Maytenus boaria

Mimulus luteus

Mitraria coccinea
Fitzroya cupressoides

Nolana paradoxa

Nothofagus glauca, N. obligua, others

Pasithea caerulea

Peumus boldo

Prosopis chilensis

Puya alpestris

Puya berteroniana

Puya chilensis

Rhodophilia

Schizanthus

Sisyrinchium striatum

Trichocereus chilensis

Tropaeolum

Ugni molinae

The bigger question, of course, is "what's available"?

Hi all,

I'm working on a redesign of a small public mediterranean garden here in
California, and we're planning on using the four sections of the garden to
highlight interesting plants from each of the other mediterranean climates
(other than California). I've got tons of ideas for plants in the South
Africa, Australia, and Mediterranean zones, but I haven't found much
information about plants from the mediterranean climate region of Chile.
Does anyone have any suggestions of plants to use and/or sources for plant
lists? I'm looking mostly for shrubs (10' tall and under), perennials, and
bulbs.

Plants from the mediterranean climate region of Chile seems like an
interesting discussion topic in general. Chile feels like the forgotten
stepchild of the medit climates to me...the mattoral isn't as well known as
the chapparel, maquis, ! or fynbos. What do you think?
