This is especially alarming considering the problems with Pine Pitch Canker here in Monterey, and Sudden Oak Death up and down the state. We still lose big pines, and I can't imagine losing some of the really old palms that have been landmarks for decades here. If you were to ask people what the iconic plant image of California is, I bet most people would probably say "Palms!"
I sort of wonder if the lack of press about it might be due to an image that I notice some people have in California (especially Monterey and points north, in my observation) where palms are seen as garden accessories and signs of excess and decadence? So, unlike Oaks where people have made a big deal (rightly so) of Sudden Oak Death, the death of palms is not seen as a big thing at all.
