[medit-plants] Re: "Urbanite" in the landscape

Another installation of stacked concrete by Shirley Watts.  As I recall, her client was motivated to saw their existing patio into slabs of equal width.  Then the cut edges were aligned perfectly creating a very clean edge.  A different look! (see attached image)

Hi Steve -

We use iron sulfate a lot to tint concrete surfaces.  You just mix some of this common landscaping product into water, creating a milky liquid.  Wet your concrete, then apply the milky iron sulfate slurry.  When dry, you will notice some brownish to orange tints.  You can reapply as needed to get the desired effect.  This mixture reacts with the concrete directly - it is not a stain or paint - so different concrete reacts differently.

Medit-Planters,

I like how stacked concrete looks, especially when it is tinted with iron sulfate or some other colorant. to make it look more stone-like, this is best done before stacking them so that each piece is a slightly different color. i have plans to do just this next year when I have managed to find enough recycled concrete for my project.

Hey folks -

Curious to know of people's experiences using (or seeing) "urbanite" in the landscape.  Using recycled poured concrete paving has been around since the 1970s in California, and I know it is now used in other countries.  Wondering if you all might know of some stellar examples or situations relating to the use of this material.
