I used to grow this on my nursery quite a few years ago where we used
it as a 'cold house ornamental'.
Schinus molle can be propped from seed or by half-ripened cuttings.
The seed is sown in a proprietary seed compost and lightly covered.
If maintained at 22 - 26C, gemrination should take place within
2/3weeks although it can be a bit erratic.
Half ripened shoots will roots if taken with a 'heel'. The prepared
shoots should be about 10 cms. long with the soft 'tips' pinched out.
These need to be inserted into a very free draining compost - 50/50
coarse sand/ peat mix, kept lighlty shaded, moist and 'closed' in a
propagator or even a sealed, plastic bag. Base heat of around 21C.
will greatly assist the cuttings to root, although during July and
August, this may not be absolutely necessary in many areas.
Any UK readers know of source for this plant? I left my stock behind
when I sold up and feel certain it would succeed well in my garden in
the far south west.
