Ceanothus

Does anyone have advice on how to prune Ceanothus griseus "Yankee Point'
(a spreading low growing form) - mine was overgrown last year and as a
result has become a little leggy - it has just finished flowering. The
outer edges of the plant look great - but the centre is almost bare -
can I cut into old wood to thicken it up or is it too late?

Also does anyone have experience growing Ceanothus 'Glorie de
Versailles' - I have it in a fairly hot dry spot next to Salvia "Black
Knight', roses, yuccas, echiums and artemisia - the rest are thriving
but this particular Ceanothus is OK but not thriving - I think that it
is meant to do well in the UK so maybe it would like more water and a
bit more shade? Any suggestions?
