The time to prune ceanothus bushes in California is just after flowering.
The classic advice is to only cut branches with a thickness of less than
a standard lead pencil. So it would seem that removing old wood or taking out
an entire (old) stem totally which is usually recommended with many shrubs is
not a good idea. Perhaps others have better advice.

Does anyone have advice on how to prune Ceanothus griseus "Yankee Point'
(a spreading low growing form) - mine was overgrown last year and as a
result has become a little leggy - it has just finished flowering. The
outer edges of the plant look great - but the centre is almost bare -
can I cut into old wood to thicken it up or is it too late?
