Dear Susan
Glad to know YOU at least got the message.
Snails and slugs seem to be on a lot of minds at present and I offer for
everyone's interest a couple of the more way-out control ideas.
The first comes from research in India. The University of Gorakhpur has
found extracts of root ginger will kill some snails, so perhaps there is
scope for a barrier of grated ginger (or even ginger mixed with
vaseline??)
The second is from America where it has been found that the pitcher
plant Saracenia purpurea has a formidable appetite for slugs and snails.
These decompose so quickly they were missed by earlier researchers.
However recent studies at the University of Iowa have shown that slugs
and snails can amount to 20% of the plant's diet.
I have occasionally seen Saracenia for sale locally, though not in very
recent years. It seems I have unknowingly missed out on a useful helper.
