then there are some weeds we will never get rid of (probably) such as
Annual wild oats, ripgut brome, Briza maxima, etc. These are the most
prominent weeds in much of california. THe reason i grumble about
things like these is they put out natives like the bunch grasses. I
heard that in california there probably would be less land slides in
the hills if annual grasses had never taken a hold, since its the deep
roots on the native bunch grasses that hold the hills together better.
Although if the state of california one miraculous day decided to try
to get rid of all the annual grasses (highly unlikely), then sheep
herders and cattle ranchers would probably go into fits. Unfortunately
some weeds are economically important. On the other hand, there are
some natives regarded as pests, such as Coyote bush (Baccharis (forget
the species). However, at the Watershed Institute on my schools campus,
they use it to "sew" together sides of hills starting to give way.
