Re: Gumming of Almonds



Wim,

I understand that gumming in almond trees and other Rosaceae is normally
a symptom of some sort of stress, not a disease in itself. If you prune
heavily you will get rid of the effects of the original problem but
probably not of the problem itself.

Down here gumming is often a symptom of lack of oxygen in root areas
(due to soil compaction,  waterlogging, etc.). Also sometimes it appears
after damage by a heavy frost and I just learned from my plant disease
book that it can also be a symptom of certain types of fungus (but
doesn't say which ones nor how to treat them).

What are your soil conditions like?
