Apart from Irises, nobody has yet mentioned bulbs, quite a few of which
abound all round the Med itself. What about species cyclamen (every
known species apart from a very rare one from Somalia) daffodils
(especially the Hoop Petticoats) and many Fritallarias and Tulips? Also
Anemones, Colchicums, Sternbergias and Crocuses to list only the most
well-known. I hazard a guess that the bulb flora of the Mediterranean
may be the richest on earth and certainly has species to suit all
tastes. For me I think the Cyclamen and the Daffodils are probably tops
though I would really be hard put to choose just ten.
