Moira,
What kind of sawdust do you use?  I have had good success with coarse
cedar sawdust for many things and use a big pile of it to heel things in
(that are waiting another year to get planted in the ground) to keep the
roots cool in summer, rather than above ground in pots and notice the
root system takes off in the sawdust.
