Help save the Med-garden

Dear Med-l list:
I want to inform you about a situation that is occurring at the
Fullerton Arboretum. The Fullerton Arboretum is on the campus
of California State University at Fullerton. The Fullerton
Arboretum has 26 acres of land. 22 acres are planted and the
four unplanted acres are planed to be a Mediterranean garden.

The University has grown rapidly and has failed to plan for the
parking they need as it is commuter college. They now want to
use 4 acres (15% of the arboretum's) of sculptured land as a
parking lot. This area is rolling breams up to 30 ft tall and
the area is covered with 2 ft of mulch 3 to 5 year old volunteer
trees. The university plans to level the parking lot area and
put the dirt on the semi developed land next to the parking area
thereby taking up more land and endangering some growing native
oaks. The college wants to use this land for three years with
an option of two additional years. The college has a history of
not giving up anything they designate as temporary. For example
the temporary buildings they built in the 1960’s are still in
use. The consensus of most of the Friends of the Fullerton
Arboretum, many who are professors or employees of the
university is, if university get the parking lot, the arboretum
will never get it back again.

The decision is to allow the parking lot will be made by a
commission of 7 people. Three appointed by the university and
three from the city. The 7th is selected from applicants by the
other six. In the past 25 years this commission has been made
up of residents of the community who had an interested in the
arboretum. When the terms of the last commission expired the
college appointed three of their administrators to the
commission. Their the obvious mission to guarantee the success
of this university project.

If I were employed by company A and also board member of
company B I would have a conflict of interest if I voted on
business to be conducted between company B and company A. Why
is the university administrative employees different from the
example above.

I need your help to flood their email boxes with protest against
the use of the Mediterranean garden area as a parking lot.
