Nancy,
When you go to Madeira, do try to drive along the north coast road. It's a
bit like Highway 1 near Big Sur but steeper and wetter, with waterfalls,
ravines, tunnels, vertical cliffs, ocean, etc. Lots of interesting endemic plant
life too. I can't reliably recommend any place to stay, as it was 11 years ago
when I was last there, but Porto do Moniz, in the NW corner, is (was?) a
tiny, charming town with a hotel called the "Orca."
(BTW, for others reading who may not know, Big Sur is a wild area on the
California coast between San Francisco and Los Angeles)
