Check the pH of the water. If pH is high
(& for example contains Chlorides, Fluorides etc) you will be making
compounds in the soil with (eg Mg, Na) free metals to form salts. Salts in
the soil around the roots draws moisture out of the plant. Typical
symptoms are "burning" of the leaves followed rapidly by
death.
Bougainvillea tolerates sea spray (in Med) but if irrigated with alkaline
water, it dies. Clay soils are especially susceptible because they are
richer in this group of elements.
Another hint - we often plant Bougainvillea in their containers having
first opened the base up because they often have poor root systems in containers
& seem to establish better this way. The roots don't get to fall apart
when you plant them & seem to find their own way out within a few months
anyhow.
