And my guess is that the water-stressed summer, plus the very
well-drained sandy site, is just what has allowed it to survive.

The mention of a sandy soil also reminds me that the majority of
Australian soils are low in nutrients, particularly phosphate, so plants
from that part of the world are happiest in very lean soils.
