I don't know if this topic was ever further explored
after its first mention on this list. I think it will
be of great interest to many people, as it proposes to
make major changes on what new plants,(among other
things), would be allowed into the country. Currently
new plant/seed imports are crossreferenced to an
existing list of known or predicted invasive or
nondesireable species. The white list may end up
proposing that any non-native, (to the U.S.A.),
species be prohibited from entry unless controlled
tests are run to determine that it is not
undesireable.
People in the mediterranean plants group can find out
more about the topic at www.geocities.com/nowhitelist.
I realize that this topic might be a volatile one, as
many people will have differing opinions on the
necessity for this legislation. My first impression
in reading the Nowhitelist Group's mandate was,"How
can anyone defend the invasive characteristics of wild
boars, scotch broom or Cordateria jubata in
California? On the other hand, it would be very
frustrating to someone who likes to collect and grow
unusual/non-native plants, to be told that they were
prohibited. I didn't read any of the discussion of
the No whitelist egroup, and wonder what the general
reaction of the public has been... I'd be interested
to hear other's views on the topic...
