Re:Philosophical Question

Like Steve French I too enjoy the jottings of others but I am also guilty of staying too quiet for too long so I trust this will help to make amends and to introduce myself and why I enjoy the list.

I discovered the list through David Fenwick who holds the National Collection of Crocosmia and Tulbaghia here in the England after complaining about the number of OT chatter on general garden lists.  Like many reading this my primary interest is the plants.  What happens to catch my eye usually finds its way in to the garden.  My garden is my place of refuge, but it is also my design pallet and the home of my ever-increasing plant collection.  The landscaping element is created to provide the right conditions for the plants.  The garden is not that of a mediterranean purist.  Indeed, I am a firm believer that any specialist garden is generally improved by the addition of  'more ordinary plants' that can support the collection throughout the year.  Medit plants introduces me to plants previously unknown to me and discussions are invariably informative and interesting.  I enjoy reading about the climate conditions of other peoples' back yards and what they grow succesfully or otherwise.  Stories of triumph over adversity are particularly enjoyable!!!  Success or failure is I think, equally important to us all.  I for one, tend to learn more from a failure than a success!!!!

My garden is something of a restoration.  It is located in what was a fabulous Victorian walled garden of around 1885/1900.  Once an exotic garden (it was vegetables and fruit then) in its own right with 13 teak greenhouses, my mother and I are putting our own stamp on the site by developing it for the exotics of today but restoring features which are as useful today as they were then.

If you do visit my garden site I hope you enjoy it and pass on your comments.  Thank you.
