Hi Richard,
One year, I didn't water my orange tree very much. Then I felt guilty and
dumped a lot of water on it and what little fruit was on the tree split
open very quickly. I think the inside of the fruit swelled more quickly
than the outside could stretch. Unfortunately, in your case, Mother Nature
was responsible for the uneven watering so I am not sure what you can do
in the future to prevent splitting fruit. But I don't think fruit split
is sign of a disease.
Last year, I tried to keep the tree well watered once fruit set
occurred hoping that the tree wouldn't absorb too much water when the
winter rains came. The fall/winter rains came very late last year,
after I had pulled off the oranges, so I never rigorously tested my
hypothesis. I am doing the same this year.
I wonder how commercial growers prevent this problem?
