Re: Plants in sand?

A not at all tropical plant (it's a UK native and thrives on our own
sand-dunes in the far north west) but one with dramatic foliage and real
presence is Eryngium maritimum - low-growing, sprawling, with bold, jaggedly
toothed, weapon-like, ever-silver (rather than ever-green) foliage and
dramatic deep blue flower heads. It actively resents decent soil - indeed,
any soil at all - and is only really happy when lashed by salt gales and
growing out of pure sand. I can barely grow it in the pampered conditions of
my garden, even though said garden is within spitting distance of the sea
(it's the sea which does the spitting, not me!).
