Re: cold, hardiness, and lies


You certainly can't go by the book. I'm generally forced into buying plants from vendors that don't know anything about them and who group almost everything into either the daisy or jasmine species, and they're selling them to grow in pots in the protected courtyards and patios in town. But I live 2 km out and 150 m up and on a north, rather than west, face of the mountains - and they go outside.

The obvious strategy is to buy it and see what happens, even figuring out what it is later, if necesssary.

I've got hydrangeas that can't take the heat, lantanas that will die in the cold, and various and sundry inappropriate plants doing well. On the other hand I can't make a rose of Sharon stay alive when they did perfectly well in Toronto's temperature range of -25º to +35º C.

Whatever.

Then again, that's why this mailing list is so valuable. You read the book, then consult the list to find out what really might happen. (That's if I can figure what it's called, of course.)
