Re: rosemary hedges, was disease

Hi Carol, and all considering a rosemary hedge:

I've now seen about three rosemary hedges in southern California. All are doing
well, and I've not heard of "Crown Gall" disease on any individual rosemary
here, although I have seen it on roses. The cultivar used in the hedges I'm
familiar with is "Tuscan Blue", a widely available upright rosemary. Only one
of the hedges shows any splitting, and this is in a spot that gets some shade.

The cultivar I particularly like for shaping (ball, cone etc.) is called "Herb
Cottage" only available AFAIK mail order from Goodwin Creek Gardens in Oregon:
www.goodwincreekgardens.com
It is only 3 ft. high after 6 years, with very dense tight growth. However you
never get to see the lovely dark blue flowers it produces with all that
clipping. I do have the cultivar "Majorica Pink" clipped as a half ball, but
it splits and I wish I had not used it. "Arp" splits as well!

I wish I knew if rosemary starts as easily as other plants used for hedging.
Can anyone tell me if cuttings taken now and stuck in the soil 6" to 8" apart
will root? ? ? The hedges I'm familiar with were planted from 1-gallon cans
at 10" apart and that can get pretty expensive!

Alessandra mentioned she was thinking of replacing her "belated" hedge with
either dwarf pomegranite (Punica granatum 'Nana') or dwarf olive (Olea
europaea). The cultivar available here is "Little Ollie", grown by Monrovia
Nursery. I have used this for a hedge (a very short one and goes around a
corner). It is lovely. Mine is only 3' high, very dense with repeated
shearing, and does not fruit.
