Re: echium

I don't think soil type is the culprit regarding the difficulty E.pininana
has in Southern California. Ellen's soil is clay and mine sandy. We're
both in Sunset zone 24. In Mendocino Jan says they thrive in sandy soil
near the coast but my Echiums came from my friend who lives about a mile
inland between Mendocino and Fort Bragg and gardens in very heavy clay where
her Echium pininana thrive and self sow.

I've grown E. candicans and E. halopensis with no problems but like Ellen my
2 pininana died after about a year of looking quite healthy. One of them
rotted the other fasciated had tiny puny leaves and looked so unhappy I took
it out. If there is a way to grow them successfully in S. California I
would love to so if anyone knows why we've had problems I also would like to
know.
