Re: Artemisia tridentata in Michigan?

Not sure about saltbushes in MICHIGAN or Atlanta/ Charleston because of
the very cold winters and wet and humid summers. You could try pulling
off the dead leaves of Savia apiana to prevent rots starting and bugs
gathering for shelter. In my dry climate the leaves afll off naturally
and there is no build up of dead leaves.

Artemisia canescens might be a better bet; at least it is very low and
wiry, no succulent parts to freeze solid or rot, and it would be easy to
cover with a winter mulch if that were necessary. It is winter dormant,
tho not really deciduous - the leaves do fall off but there is usually a
show of swelling new growth buds around the same time. It roots as it
sprawls and seems very hardy but easy to manage, not at all weedy. It
would have to be grown very hard so it retains its habitual shallow
carpet of leaves and stems - silver all over, no flowers to speak of,
cut back to ground level in winter - easy.
