Thank you Catherine, The helleborus is a good suggestions. The Mertensia virginica
suggested by Nicholas sounds very promising as I am particularly partial to summer dormant plants, just a matter of availability. Dormancy in summer saves a great deal of work (no frizzled leaves or flowers to worry about), can be used in those difficult areas, certainly saves the hose pipe and allows for layering of plants in the same area.
The Anthriscus Ravens Wing is perennial and has been clumping up nicely for two or three years now. As soon as it has flowered it goes dormant and happily poppes up again early spring. I seem to recall an English catalogue mentioning a summer dormancy, so it seems not just this climate. Found it will not tolerate pot culture.
The Ferula communis also exhibits the same characteristics although I have found no mention of dormancy in this plant. As the Ferula disappears Euphorbia cyparissias
appears and thrives in the heat. This Euphorbia is quite restrained by the heat here but in a cooler climate it can become a weed. Besides in a cooler climate I am sure something more interesting could be used.
Thank you
