As Diane said. They are the fruit of the Jujube tree, which used to be quite
common as a yard or street tree here in Greece. You don't see them much any more.
The fruit were never widely sold... just the sort of thing you plucked off a
neighbor's tree when you were a child and remember fondly but wouldn't go out of
your way to find again.
In New Zealand these are occasionally availble in the supermarkets under the name of Chinese Dates.
