As Diane said. They are the fruit of the Jujube tree, which used to be quiteIn New Zealand these are occasionally availble in the supermarkets under the name of Chinese Dates.
common as a yard or street tree here in Greece. You don't see them much any more.
The fruit were never widely sold... just the sort of thing you plucked off a
neighbor's tree when you were a child and remember fondly but wouldn't go out of
your way to find again.
