I'm pretty sure it's a Franklinia on Claremont Ave near Telegraph in Oakland's Temescal district, and, now that I think of it, there's quite a healthy one in the front garden of the Maybeck house at Derby and Hillegass in Berkeley. (for our Australian, Kiwi, European etc members, these are locations near San Francisco. Sunset zone 16/17 depending on whether the sun's out)

There is at least one at the UC Botanical Garden. I don't think it likes the dry summers. It can get quite hot up there around Strawberry Canyon.good luck!bridgetseattle, wa
