Hi Margaret,
Anyway the two solutions are very difficult to face, either planting or keeping alive your plants in pots.
I had the same dilemna this summer, and I planted two choisya late spring in june and they died all the two, one was in a container and the other one was taking out of my nursery bed, so it was bare-root.
It has been allright with the perennials, because I cut all the foliage and with the irrigation system, it recovered well. But anyway, I will not plant in july or august here in the south of France because particularly this year, we didn't have rain from mid-april to mid-september except one storm in august.
If you 're obliged to plant now, I suppose you must put a lot of mulch all around the bed. I'm wondering too if it will be a good idea to prune shrubs in order to minimize evaporation from the leaves. Perhaps we'll have answers to these questions on the list.

Has anyone any experience with summer planting? It is late spring here in Victoria, Australia, and I am so far behind with planting tube stock I'm likely to be faced with the choice to plant in early summer or carry stock over summer. I know some people in Australia do summer plant but I don't know anybody personally who does and I was wondering if anyone in the wider world has any experience of it and especially any tips.Margaret Healey
