Tulipa saxatilis has thrived and is on its way to becoming an aggressive weed on my coastal Los Angeles unwatered north-facing slope.  Very pretty lavender pink and gold, reliable bloomer every year, spreads by "droopers".  No other tulip has ever done so well.

Cathy,
I too have this species which indeed seems to be unique. It has survived and spread for at least thirty years for me in the top of an unmortared boulder retaning wall right on a very sunny north-facing bank (Our hottest aspect here). I do nothing for it but  pull out the ocasional weed when it has gone dormant, but it fathfully comes back every year despite the dry heat of its position.during its dormancy.
