If any of you are free to do the tourist thing around Monterey while
there for the conference, you might want to check out Orientations at
the old Marsh building. It's down the street from Casa Munras right
next to San Carlos Cathedral. It's hard to miss as the building is
designed after a Chinese merchant's compound. They have two gardens, a
Japanese garden with the oldest and biggest Japanese maple I've seen
in the area, and a Chinese garden that has a sort of subtropical feel
to it. Small, but beautiful, and Orientations is worth visiting to see
the East and South East Asian antiques they sell (the place is set up
more like a museum).
