As I walked in my garden this morning, I was
wondering what to do with the pine needles that
fall in great quantities at the end of Summer.
I am sure fellow members of the list have
judicious and ecological answers to offer me.
At my community garden, one of my fellow
gardeners doesn't grow winter vegetables, so she
uses pine needles to mulch the beds. She rakes
stone-pine needles and piles them up a few inches
thick on her garden beds, where they are rained
on all winter and prevent weeds from taking over.
A neighbor who has some huge deodar trees lets
the needles fall in garden beds, where over the
years they've formed a thick mulch. She also has
her mow/blow crew collect them in the dry season,
then uses them as a mulch during the rainy season
so that the dog doesn't get muddy paws.
