Dear Tim,
It most certainly is Alister Stella GRAY. It is a Noisette rose, tho'
sometimes listed also as a Tea-Noisette (eg by GS Thomas) but
many would think that overly inclined to hair splitting. Introduced (ie
not bred) by George Paul of Paul's Cheshunt Nurseries (UK) in
1894. Recieved an Award of Merit from the RHS in 1893 when
exhibited by the raiser, AH Gray. Early refs quote things like - 'late
to get started', 'slow starter', 'flowering period is long', 'the strong
point of this rose is its autumn flowering'. I don't have any Royal
National Rose Society journals from England so cannot go back
looking for bios and obits to check out Mr A H Gray.
It is one of my favourite roses.
