Re: Starlings

Seems as though they must have all moved up north then Tim. When I
first moved here many years ago, there were thousands of them. I
haven't seen one here for several years and even over at Paignton
where populations were always very much higher, they are now a rare
sight. Come to think of it, I've not seen a sparrow around here for
as long as I can remember. However, there are crows - all over the
place and in ever increasing numbers too.

Pigeons are a great nuisance as well, although rapidly increasing
populations of peregrine falcons and buzzards does seem to be having a
slight effect - if only by frightening them away. I spent a very
pleasant half hour watching a Great Green Woodpecker carefully probing
the bark of the Corsican and Scots pines in the churchyard behind my
garden yesterday. We see quite a few of these nowadays and I must say
they are stunningly coloured birds - equally as bright as any of the
amazon parrots.
